If you're looking for a Grim Reaper Costume... then you've come to the right place.

Grim Reaper CostumeBut... first I'll give you just a little background first on the Grim Reaper. Death as a character entity is a concept that has existed in many societies since the beginning of history.

In our culture, death is often given the name the "Grim Reaper".

Grim Reaper CostumeFrom about the 15th century onwards this character came to be shown as a skeletal figure carrying a large scythe and clothed in a black cloak with a hood.

The Grim Reaper was also given the name of the Angel of Death. The Grim Reaper is Death with a capital D. He is perhaps the most recognized character of all time.

Other beliefs hold that the character of Death is only an imaginary creature, serving only to sever the last tie from the soul to the body and guide the deceased to the next world and having no control over the fact of their death.

Today, death is portrayed in many forms of popular fiction. One of the most iconic portrayals is that of the 1957 film The Seventh Seal, by Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. It is an influential (and heavily symbolic) movie depicting one of the most famous moments in the portrayal of Death.

In the movie, a medieval knight returning from a crusade plays a game of chess with Death, with the knight's life depending upon the outcome of the game.

The Grim Reaper is Death with a capital D. He is perhaps the most recognized entity of all time, neither ghost nor god; the Grim Reaper is a imaginary creature who’s job is to conduct the souls of the recently dead into the afterlife. He is often depicted as a tall pale skeletal figure shrouded in a long, dark, black hooded cloak wielding a scythe which he uses to harvest souls with, although some accounts say he just touches the person to pop their soul so they don’t feel pain when they die.

When the Grim Reaper moves, he seemingly glides rather than walking.

The Grim Reaper is known for not saying much, always having a grin on his face, and of course being the main focus of

attention in whatever room he is in. He is able to turn his head completely around  so that he can survey his domain; The Reaper must be vigilant lest someone try to cheat him.

Decorations of the Grim Reaper haunt tombs and graves, often with the engraving of “Rich Man, Poor Man, Beggar and Thief… you will one day be were I am.

John asks…

Decipher my DREAM (This a freaky one)?

I had a dream of a demon (Grim Reaper) coming to a group of people including me hiding on a wagon. It walk round the wagon smelling everyone. Once it was opposite the wagon almost all the people ran to the other side leaving me and two others. It came round again and paused when it was smelling me again, I accidentally moved and it flung its Scythe(Grim Reapers Weapon) through my stomach. I didn't feel a thing and I immediately got up and ran as fast as I could(quite fast actually). WHAT DOES THIS MEAN, ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED?

andre1 answers:

I'm guessing the main theme of the dream is which means:
To see the grim reaper in your dream, signifies the negative, rejected aspects of your personality. It represents aspects of yourself that you have repressed. Alternatively, it symbolizes death. The dream may parallel an end to some situation, habit, or relationship in your waking life.
Hope that helps

Jenny asks…

what is the complementary colour of silver?

I'm writing a story and there's a girl that's part of the main character but she's almost the exact opposite. The main girl and the other girl both use a scythe as a weapon because the main girl is the daughter of the Grim Reaper. Her scythe has a silver handle and an obsidian blade.Because it is obsidian, it will be black. The other girl will have a scythe with a quartz blade because quartz is white and the handle will be the opposite colour of silver. A lot of question's answers say it's a darker shade of silver but I would like to know the actual name of the colour. It's the colour silver, not the metal.

Michael asks…

Does this storyline for a Manga look interesting?

I want to create a manga and the story is the following:
The story follows the life of a teen-aged school boy who hates life and has a miserable existence. When he is intended to die, the grim reaper shows up but the boy refuses to accept his fate due to the way life has treated him defies and fights the grim reaper and kills the grim reaper using his own scythe (The only weapon that can kill anything including the grim reaper). But there always has to be a reaper and death in the world, hence he becomes the new grim reaper, though since he is a mere human, he is not as powerful as the original and must carry out his duties as death while balancing school life. He is constantly tries to cling onto what humanity he has left with every soul he harvests. He eventually becomes more powerful near the end of the the first arc where he has to assert his dominance as death on the world that doesn't accept him since he is new and can be seen and resists which means the body count will be high, until the point the world fears him as the original grim reaper. He is no the secretive type and almost everybody knows him but wants nothing to do with him except few family and friends.
Side notes:
_There are angels, demons and some undead but he is neutral since he is death and doesn't take sides, only partaking if the sides upset the balance of the world (there has to be both good and evil), but is the most powerful being in the world (he is death after all)
_Character development: From depressed cynical to sadistic killer with sympathy for victims
_Story will have a serious tone unlike other reapers in some anime/manga
_Story is still in development so there are plenty of plot and character holes
_One of the major scenes is when the the army and authorities surrounds him on live t.v with family and school peers watching, he massacres the entire army leaving them speechless and begins to assert his power. (scene still in development)
_Titles and riles: Death, the grim reaper, the fourth horsemen of the apocalypse, the angel of death and occasionally father time (its in the mythology)
_Can control time and life and death
_One of his main internal conflicts is finding out he has to be one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse and partake in ending the world along with his loved ones, eventually.
_while he causes death Psychopomps guides deceases souls to their afterlife.
Please voice your opinions.

David asks…

What are some cool abilities for weapons?

Okay im writing and drawing a manga right now that involves grim reapers and fighting with scythes (that's to get right to the point lol) and The organization my main character has to get rid of has six members with scythes with special abilities. I don't really care for generic abilities like ice fire lightning ect. For example i have three abilities so far one scythe when you are struck with it you bleed waaay more then you should like a little scratch or cut ends up causing blood to gush out.
the other two abilities i've got made up is paralysis and the break of bones if your just slightly touched by it. SO if you guys have any ideas for abilities that are odd like those it would be cool! Also i came up with one where the scythe has the ability to stretch extremely far like rubber (think Luffy) makes the fight long distance not to sure though. What do you think about the ideas so far and what ideas do you guys have?

andre1 answers:

Actually I am writing a story myself. I can let you have some of my ideas.

1. The ability to open transdimensional gate ways or teleport
2. The ability to destroy the soul without harming the body of course.
3. The ability to To control a target like a puppet.
4. The ability to transform the scythe into whatever weapon you want it to be

Carol asks…

I saw the is that a bad thing?

about 2 yrs ago,as i was walking to the bathroom i looked out the screen door and outside my gate was the grim reaper. he was just standing there.he was wearing this long blk robe and he carried a sife. His hood was up so i wasn't able to see his face. i freaked out and ignored it. i went in the bathroom and came out in about 2 mins. i looked out at the gate again and he was Gone. i tried to tell my family what had happend the next da, but they thought i was just joking.which i wasn't.Is seeing the grim reaper a bad thing?
i'm not on drugs. when i saw Him i was about 13 years old. and i'm not mentally challenged either.
hmm yeah maybe it was some kids playing messing around with my head. weird*

andre1 answers:

Ok hon, must have been someone trying 2 scare u, coz isnt not real in the way he's described (the robe & sife). The grim reaper is actually what ppl think the angel of death looks like. Let me tell u he doesnt look like that. Probably a prankster or a demon (djinn) trying 2 scare u.

Maria asks…

Grim reaper in dreams?

Ok ever since i was younger like 10 years now i keep having dreams of meeting the grim reaper. Usually in the dreams i die repetitively the same death over and over then meet him and wake up or i don't die and just meet him and we become friends somehow i can see him and we hang out and he has a really funny sense of humor where killing people gets both me and him to laugh after he says watch this. He also tells me that for some reason im meant to be the next grim reaper but i don't really accept it and don't know what im meant to do if it so. Those are my 2 dreams that reoccur a lot with me seeing him and i kinda wonder what some people are going to interpret them as and yes I die in my dreams a lot sometimes i never even meet him. He has a black robe and a skeleton for a body and takes it off around me and a scythe sometimes and kills people mainly just by touching them not really using his scythe.

andre1 answers:

What you should do i see a psychic and tell what was happening. This might help but i'm not so sure. Hope this helps!

Donna asks…

okay, who stereotyped the Grim Reaper, and why is he a robed skeleton with a scythe?

and is this a peersonification of death, or is this what someone saw what death looked like?

Is death=god?
is god=shinigami?
please, before i spark all over the place, i need info on the great GR.

andre1 answers:

In modern-day European-based folklore, Death is known as the Grim Reaper, depicted as wearing a dark hooded cloak and wielding a scythe.

The garb of Death or the black mourning robe, for which the first references are found in the early fifteenth century, is very close to the robe of the priest or monk who officiated at the death bed. It is interesting to note that the dead body itself was never garbed in black -- the colour of the winding sheet or shroud seems always to have been white.

The scythe is an image that reminds us that Death reaps the souls of sinners like the peasant harvests corn in his field. Each movement of the scythe brings thousands of souls.

In Greek mythology, Chronos (Cronus) was the king of titans and the father of Zeus. He was also a harvest god called Father Time and carried a sickle which is a tool used in harvesting grain. The Grim Reaper carrying a scythe is directly derived from Cronus. The myth of Chronos eating his children was used in a poetic sense for time devouring all things, as in the old saying "nothing lasts forever."

The three Greek words that were either related originally or related through confusion later were: Chronus (meaning "time"), Cronus (the god of harvest before the Greek gods took over), and corone (meaning "crow"). Little wonder then that we often see a crow accompanying the Grim Reaper.

Lisa asks…

seeing a grim reaper figure at the bottom right hand corner of my bed?

A short while ago i was staying at my friends Granny's house. we were in bed sleeping and i woke up and i seen a grim reaper figure at the bottom right hand corner of the bed.i couldn't see the face. it was as if it was missing but i seen the black robe and spear.. I thought it may have been the shadowing of something outside but then i sat up to look and it was definitely a figure. i quickly lay back down and shut my eyes tightly closed and looked back over to see if it was still there but this time it was at the bottom left hand corner. i felt so afraid so i put the blankets over my head and just lay there. i fell back to sleep after some time. I recently read that this odd figure represents death. but nobody i knew died? this figure i seen was about 3/4months ago and last week my friend died. but surely that would have nothing to do with it as i seen the figure such a long time ago... no doubt i will remember seeing the figure for the rest of my life as it really scared me. please help me to understand this figure...

andre1 answers:

Something very similar happened to me about two months ago, I woke up in bed to see a grim reaper like figure standing at the right side of my bed, but instead of at the foot of the bed it was right by my side (so scary), I even got out of bed and went into the bathroom because I thought I was dreaming but when I came back it was still there. As far as I know noone close to me has died recently so it's all very confusing. Just like you I'm sure that this will scare me for the rest of my life but the way I've started to think about it is.... This figure never hurt me, all it did was stand there so why should i be afraid? To me people should be more afraid of the living than the dead. Also if like mine the figure you saw was very scary in that it had no face then if you start having nightmares about it, try to imagine the figure with a face, but a funny or smiling face (sounds weird but has worked for me).

The - Angel of Death or Just Bad PR

We have all heard of the Grim Reaper. In English, Death is often given the name Grim Reaper and since the 15th century, he has come to be a skeletal figure carrying a large scythe and clothed in a black cloak with a hood. He is also known as the Angel of Death thanks to the Hebrew Bible.

Whatever you call death, he gets a bad rap in every religion, every culture. And yes, we all understand in some parts of the world he is actually a she (whatever sharpens your scythe). He is the evil, demonic figure that appears to you at your time of death to take your soul to the gates of heaven or the gates of hell. Everyone fears the Reaper, despite what the song may tell you. Come on, you remember the song, "Don't Fear the Reaper"? Or were you sipping too much from that kool aid bong? But I must question why does everyone fear the Reaper? Why does everyone perceive him or her as the ultimate evil demonic character that causes our life to end? Why do people from all over the world blame him for their untimely death? Is death ever timely? Come on people let's grow up a little and think about this. If the Grim Reaper had a good PR agent, his image would not be so bad. Let me explain.

First, the Reaper is an Angel of God, a dark angel but none the less, an angel of God. God selected this angel to harvest the souls of individuals. He didn't want this job in the first place but he took it for 3 reasons: 1) it pays well, 2) the benefits are great (come on people, wouldn't you just love to harvest the soul of Kristen Stewart or Taylor Lautner?) and 3) you just don't say No to God. So let's get this straight, the Angel of Death did not apply for this job, he was chosen by God.

Second point is the Reaper is just doing his job. He doesn't determine when you die. That's God's job. God is the one writing up the Reaper's "To Do" list for the day. The Reaper is just following orders. So if anyone is the bad guy here its God not the Reaper. God knows what a horrific job it is, that's why he hired the Dark Angel to do it. God couldn't afford this type of bad press because he was to busy causing floods and pestilence on this earth. I wonder what he was doing to other planets? Well, if you look at history, God has kept the Reaper very busy. Remember, the Reaper is just checking off his "To Do" list items.

I say we need to start focusing our energy on what a great job the Grim Reaper is doing. He gets great jobs reviews. And look who he is working for, God is 100 times harder on his employees than Donald Trump. He has kept his job for thousands of years. Can you say that? So let's give the Grim Reaper the respect and credit he deserves and cast him in the correct light, a hard working employee doing a great job for a very tough boss. I hope you can come to appreciate the Grim Reaper like I have. May you be harvested kindly and enjoy your next life!
