If you're looking for a Grim Reaper Costume... then you've come to the right place.

Grim Reaper CostumeBut... first I'll give you just a little background first on the Grim Reaper. Death as a character entity is a concept that has existed in many societies since the beginning of history.

In our culture, death is often given the name the "Grim Reaper".

Grim Reaper CostumeFrom about the 15th century onwards this character came to be shown as a skeletal figure carrying a large scythe and clothed in a black cloak with a hood.

The Grim Reaper was also given the name of the Angel of Death. The Grim Reaper is Death with a capital D. He is perhaps the most recognized character of all time.

In folk lore , the Grim Reaper is able to actually cause the victim's death, leading to tales that he can be bribed, tricked, or outwitted in order to retain one's life.

Other beliefs hold that the character of Death is only an imaginary creature, serving only to sever the last tie from the soul to the body and guide the deceased to the next world and having no control over the fact of their death.

Today, death is portrayed in many forms of popular fiction. One of the most iconic portrayals is that of the 1957 film The Seventh Seal, by Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. It is an influential (and heavily symbolic) movie depicting one of the most famous moments in the portrayal of Death.

In the movie, a medieval knight returning from a crusade plays a game of chess with Death, with the knight's life depending upon the outcome of the game.

The Grim Reaper is Death with a capital D. He is perhaps the most recognized entity of all time, neither ghost nor god; the Grim Reaper is a imaginary creature who’s job is to conduct the souls of the recently dead into the afterlife. He is often depicted as a tall pale skeletal figure shrouded in a long, dark, black hooded cloak wielding a scythe which he uses to harvest souls with, although some accounts say he just touches the person to pop their soul so they don’t feel pain when they die.

When the Grim Reaper moves, he seemingly glides rather than walking.

The Grim Reaper is known for not saying much, always having a grin on his face, and of course being the main focus of

attention in whatever room he is in. He is able to turn his head completely around  so that he can survey his domain; The Reaper must be vigilant lest someone try to cheat him.

Decorations of the Grim Reaper haunt tombs and graves, often with the engraving of “Rich Man, Poor Man, Beggar and Thief… you will one day be were I am.

Laura asks…

What is the best way to scare my aunt?

My aunt is staying all night and I want to scare her. Not a lot though. I have a grim reaper costume with the tongue and an alien costume. Any suggestions?
I scared her once with a hamster. I put the hamster in a pot witha lid, and said if your hungry you can have whats in the pot. She opened and about had a heart attack. My mom said no more hamster tricks.

andre1 answers:

I would go with one,
just stand there in the middle of the night and make some sort of noise to wake her upi. When she sees you then AAHHHHH, there goes what you want

i am always scared when i see something weird right when i open my eyes in the dark,
go with the reaper

Helen asks…

My son wants to be a grim reaper for halloween but how can we do this without a mask? (see Pic)?

I am so not good with putting that halloween make-up on.
He wants to be this but does not want to wear the mask.
They have this costume at wal-mart for 20 bucks so any ideals?

http://www.buycostumes.com/Search_All_grim%20reaper/Category/129/Product/20368/ProductDetail.aspx

Actually the only make up i do wear when i wear it is eye shadow. I guess that is why i look so young, im 27 but everyone thinks i am 16.. lol
See what make up will do for you by not wearing it? It ages your skin

andre1 answers:

Do you know any really good face painters on your street? Maybe you can ask them to put some grey and white face paint on it's face. It is good that he chose not to put the mask on. Because they can be hard to breath in and make you all sweaty!

Good luck, and have a !!!

My husband is going to be the grim reaper and my daughter is going to be a baby elephant.

Mandy asks…

help!!!?

Aight guys I have a halloween party to go to tonite and i need a costume to wear. I'd like to keep it cheap and simple since it's a dance party. I have a neon yellow jumpsuit i would prefer to use but i also have aviators, a brown leather jacket, a cape, a grim reaper hood and some other basic stuff. Any good ideas of what I could do with just stuff at my house and minimal spending?

andre1 answers:

Throw on a pair of khakis and a light brown shirt, put on the leather jacket, the aviators, and call yourself a pilot :)

Sandra asks…

Halloween costume almost finished, need help...?

OK, so, I am gonna dress up like a demon. I would like to know what you people think, and any other perks or suggestion.

I'm a male, weight 140, and height 5.5. I'm going to put a on "grim reaper style". My face and hair, will be completely painted black. Ears, nose, everything, including neck, so my skin color will not show. I purchased 2 horns and I saw how to put them on, it will take about 1 hour with make up, but the horns will have a small coagulated blood sprouting around them, not dripping, if not, coagulated.

I was wondering if, in order to look really creepy, I should get white eye lens. I got the $90.00, but I don't know if they will add enough effect, or if they will be worth it, so, additional ideas would come in handy. There's going to be a costume contest on my job, and after that, I'm going to a halloween party...

Any other perks, or ideas for a staff would be nice. I still have nothing for my hands. So, do you think the eye lens will make a creepy effect based on what I told? Or any better, cheaper ideas, or other perks "weapons, chains, etc?

I appreciate your help... remember, I want to look ghoulish and creepy... something that you would say: Sheesh wtf is that...
Also... do you think this is ok? Does this sound creepy? Got any better nasty, demonic ideas?

To those christian fanatics out there... no, I'm not a satanist... I just want something creepy... Just had to delete a message saying I was calling satan so please... good suggestions, ty...

andre1 answers:

Get really creepy demon wings, like properly scary ones...
And get really long false nails and paint them either back or just make them look incredibly old and brown, or maybe add blood to them..
For the costume.. You COULD put on a white shirt and rip it so its almost falling of, then cover it in blood and dirt, but that might ruin the whole demon effect..
You could also get a fake human heart (if you can find one anywhere) and hold it in your hand..
ANOTHER good idea, is to get some kind of lumps or more horns and stick them down your back bone. Now that would be awesome..

Mary asks…

Dark Fairytale Costume?

Halloween costume! Haha. Yes, I'm a teenager, but dressing up is just so awesome.

I'm kind of into the darker side of life. I've been called "emo" and my friends are goth. Needless to say, I'd like a dark costume. I don't want it to be completely black. I like purple, blue, and pink. I'm such a fan of punk and victorian style clothing.

I was thinking about a fallen angel, but I'm not sure on that. Also the Grim Reaper, but not sure on that either. Now I'm thinking about a fairytale character, like Cinderella or Red Riding Hood. (I was Red Riding Hood a couple years ago--with a bloody wolf's head in a basket.) BUT- I want a twist on the character, so it's darker. I don't want anything slutty, because I'll be attending school parties/trick-or-treating with my 6 year old cousin. I'd still like something to make me look nice though. I'm also low on cash, but I love going to thrift stores. :)

I'm 5'9, average, blonde, blue-eyed, and fairly busty. I'm a sophomore, 15 years old. Uhh... Pretty much it.

Sorry for the length, and thanks for your time/help. Any ideas?
-Lol. I'm glad I inspired somebody to learn something today.
-The Pride & Prejudice Zombies are great! I'll look into that too. :D

andre1 answers:

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

Inspiration, seriously :L

I mean, you could go for that whole Dracula's bride thing the Goth kids have a hard-on for, but everyone who I know did that just stood around looking faint and pale and angsty and...vaguely embarrassed that they had their boobs hanging out of a corset :L

But yeah, if you Google it, or even if you don't, it's still a pretty kickass twist on the whole period drama thing (you said you liked Victorian stuff; Austen's time had a pretty similar style)

Nightmare Before Christmas; Corpse Bride; Sleepy Hollow. Tim Burton basically < that's my next suggestion.

....Or for me, finally, it's gonna have to be Scott Pilgrim vs. The World as a last resort.

Ruth asks…

whats a good halloween costume for a 16 year old guy?

im looking for something not bulky, cause im going to a party, i was thinking of getting that slipknot uniform (the black military uniform set and maybe the 133 mask or the mick mask. its kinda spendy though for halloween, but hey, i think they look pretty sick.
any other ideas though? i really dont have a large budget, and i want it to be at least a little origional, i dont wanna go walkin around as like the grim reaper or something because thats kind of generic as far as go.
i really dont want something bulky or stupid. (by stupid i mean something thats... i dunno, like a kissing booth or something thats bulky and.. sorry but its a little lame for my taste)

Helen asks…

Can you help me design the costume I want for Halloween?

I want to be the fairy of death (yes i made this up). Similar to the Grim Reaper she helps souls into the afterlife and grants a few wishes along the way. Anyway, how should i dress? I want to be cute looking but also evil looking and dark at the same time. I do not want the costume to be mistaken as a goth fairy. Any ideas? Thanks so much!

andre1 answers:

I don't think you can avoid being mistaken for a goth fairy with this one.... Unless....

Change your line of thinking a bit... Add some things to make it stand out, might be a good idea to carry around an old book as a prop and have all the names of the dead in it. Maybe have a scythe too. Perhaps go for shades of light purple rather then black, as purple is more common of a mourning color in history, and most depictions of death fairies are in purple

http://loteyrose.com/fappicture001-goth-fairy-full-moon.jpg

another thing you can do, is go white. White is also another color of death in many cultures far more so then black. It's the symbol of spirits and guidance of souls to the next life, as a light or beacon.
Here is a good example:

http://c2.api.ning.com/files/RTleKDbVOAvGQ5uezhPBBuR-tjYiDrJpUO*l-mzN*CCkd1UCDSDxAPoc2ba-xGcvgLIY2tTb3V1ZjoU7pGiSG5j-5hxo1YAw/anime_fairy_water2.jpg

As a prop for this one you could carry around an old lantern. A light to lead the souls to the other side. Lanterns are also related heavily with death and death rituals, such as the chinese custom of lanterns on water to remember the dead. People often left lanterns at grave sites to remember lost ones, to keep the light burning. Even today you can find many in local graveyards. It's a powerful symbol.
A fancy one would be best,

http://www.pearsonwholesale.com/store/images/uploads/38466.jpg

but you can find them all over this time of year, and at all kinds of stores, ones that look like this

http://www.oldfashionedcandlecompany.com/Lantern1.jpg

Remove the glass and spray paint it white to go with the outfit.

Yes i think the white out fit would be great for this, can't mistake you as a goth, it's in high contract with everything else, you would stand out and it's very ghostly and spirit like.

Mary asks…

Ideas for a Twilight ?

For halloween, me and my friends are going as twilight characters. I'm going as Bella, and my 3 friends are going to be Rosalie, Alice and Jane (from the Volturi).

For my costume, I'm going to be newborn Bella, and I'll be in her ripped bloody dress from the first hunt, "Jane" is going to wear a cloak along with the pale makeup and contacts and stuff, she'll be sort of like a grim reaper kind of thing, and "Rose" is going to have a ripped wedding dress for when shes a newborn and kills her old fiancee.

But I need a scary idea for Alice. I'm not sure how to make Alice be scarier. I want to make it obvious that we are vampires, but still in character. Does anyone know anything we can do, or a situation that Alice was in, that makes her look scary?

andre1 answers:

LAME.
I'm sick of hearing about those stupid books.
Do something better, or at least pick a better book.
Or try the books and authours section, they might know cause a bunch of other stupid twilighters hang out there.

Steven asks…

Illegal to cover your face in public?

I had an idea to go around town or on a bus with 9 other people dressed in like a grim reaper costume just to creep people out and have fun. My brother said it may be illegal to cover your face in public. Is this true?

andre1 answers:

I doubt it since there are many women from Eastern countries who cover their heads and faces with veils and scarves in public. Personally I think it should be illegal since these people could commit crimes and no one would be able to identify them.

John asks…

Inspiring Ideas For Hauntingly Backyard Decorations

Every October the children anticipate what they are going to turn themselves into on Halloween night, but we adults start our designing for this years outdoor Halloween decorations at least 3-6 months in advance. Turning our normal looking suburban homes into spooky houses of creepiness is an all time favorite for the neighbors as well as the children all around. After all frights and fun is what Halloween is all about.

Use pumpkins in a variety of sizes and colors, the white ones make excellent ghoulish ghost faces. Carve Halloween graveyard scenes and more on them and of course the tried and true expressive faces of horror on them. Use hay bales to make them in stacks and levels. Put glowing candles inside to set off the dramatic looks or use vibrant eerie glow sticks in greens, reds and purples to add to the scare factor.

Turn your dreary everyday front yard into a tombstone filled yard of death. You can buy plastic or foam tombstones with eerily funny epitaphs already on them. Place them strategically around the yard and then use skeletons and bloody zombies to finish off the entire look you are going for. Play creepy soundtracks also to give the visiting goblins and ghouls a fright-mare.

Create a mummy's tomb out of your yard and front porch. This is made easier with the use of life size mummies you can buy as well as everything else you will need to pull off the perfect mummy tomb. You can use spooky lit twigs and tree branches placed in faux stone urns to give even more dramatic effects to your whole Halloween settings. Use cardboard boxes of large appliances to spray paint gold and stencil Egyptian symbols on for even more additions.

Animated and lighted ghoulish creatures for outdoor use are available in many forms to add to your haunted graveyards or musky, terrifying mausoleums of horror. Some of the most popular include the cackling witch stirring her pot, the headless horseman, , rattling and talking skeletons, zombies and mummies. These can be used inside as well as outside in dark corners or passage ways to scare those who dare to enter within.

Hide a zombie in the dark only to have him come to life when someone crosses his path, just let your imagination guide you. Halloween is a time when we can all be a kid at heart and scare those we love. You can find thousands of different types of outdoor decorations for Halloween frights online that require very little to set them up.

Using props of thrashing creatures, rattling skeletons and more is even easier and the assortment to choose from greater online in the specialty stores which carry them. They have things to decorate your outdoors with that would make a professional haunted house look tame. Many are inflatable and easy to set up all you do is plug them in and watch them pop up to life just be sure they are staked to the ground securely.

There are also easy inflatable and lighted outdoor Halloween decorations. These are immaculate in their detailing from hearses with coffins and pop up skeleton's, witches with their cauldrons brewing, monster's dancing around and so much more. These are set up by simply plugging into an outdoor electrical outlet and staking to the ground. In minutes it will inflate and be ready to scare.

I've suddenly inspired by death, so to speak. I've got the long black cloak, the black "invisible" face, the skeleton hands...I've loving the idea of pointing toward a tombstone, just like in A Christmas Carol. In that regard, I am thinking I want to go as The Ghost of Christmases Yet To Come (GOCYTC). But I am undecided about wearing a string of chains as if death has broken free from the tomb...which some Ghosts OCYTC are seen wearing, or whether to carry a blade thingy, like many grim reaper costumes show. Would the chains and the blade be confusing? Will no one "get" GOCYTC and should I just go as a grim reaper? Any other creepy added touches you could think of?

I'm kinda freaked out by my own costume. This is so out of character for me, which is why I'm so into it. lol

    • ANSWER:
The 2 are different. Dickens uses a deathly figure because of Scrooge's choices. I'd guess my or your gocytc would be much more like the Ghost of Christmas Present. aida has a great idea if you really want to go as the gocytc. Personally, I'd go Grim Reaper. I love Christmas but at Halloween, it's all death, witches, the Devil and such. Happy Halloween!

  3. QUESTION:
i'm thinking on wearing my grim reaper costume to the old folks home?
to bring them halloween goodies...is this a good idea?

    • ANSWER:
Just watch out! They can take their teeth out and bite you from farther away!

  4. QUESTION:
    Anyone have good costume ideas?
Im looking for a scary costume idea. Costumes like the ringwraiths, grim reapers, skeleton things. They usually only make these costumes for guys so i will have to make my own, but i need good ideas. Anh help would be appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
well if you want to be scary, you could be like an evil clown or a dead zombie kinda thing. you should go to yahoo images and look up evil clown makeup and see what you can find, i think some of them look pretty cool. i would also suggest being a dead fairy. i think that would be so awesome. you could put like an inch of black all around your eyes, but smear the edges and pink lip gloss and like a light or faded pink or yellow short dress that looks dirty and messy but pretty at the same time so they know your a fairy. you could like rip it up and stuff, and then do the same thing with the wings. make the wings a darker color like a really dark green with black and rip them up too. then you could straighten ur hair if its not already and do a messy look. i think that would be so cool. you could add a wand with a star at the end too just to be sure they know what you are. to get an idea of what i mean go to you tube and type Halloween Horror Nights 18 2008 Opening Night Scare Zones, stop at around 37 seconds and im not sure what the girl is dressed up as but her make up on her eyes is similar to what i am trying to describe. anyways good luck and i hope for you the best. Happy Halloween!

Safety Tips For

When fall rolls around and your children start to discuss what Halloween costumes they want to wear this year, they aren't thinking about safety. They're focused on whether they want to be a fairy princess, rock star, ghoul, space alien, fireman or bumblebee. You, on the other hand, are probably thinking about how to make sure your little ones will be safe when they go trick or treating and attend Halloween parties. There are several things to keep in mind when shopping for Halloween costumes that will ensure that your children are dressed safely.

1. Buy flame resistant costumes. Check the label or, if ordering online, order from a reputable U.S. based company. These will adhere to all U.S. manufacturing guidelines. Halloween is all about Jack-O-Lanterns and flickering candles, so you don't want kids wearing costumes that could ignite if they brush against a flame. If you'll be making the outfits yourself, make sure you use only flame retardant materials. It's actually easier to purchase pre-made costumes these days than to try and find the proper materials in many instances.

2. Keep night time visibility in mind. Whenever possible, Halloween costumes should use bright and light colors that can be easily seen at night. This is relatively easy when your son wants to be a ghost or your daughter wants to dress as a fairy, but what if one of your children wants to be the ? You'll need to attach some reflective tape around the hem of the Grim Reaper's black gown and sleeves if he's going trick-or-treating. Don't compromise on his safety! A flashlight is always a good idea for kids as well; you can find small flashlights in colors to match any costume at major chain stores everywhere.

3. Good fit is essential. Be sure to check the size charts when you order Halloween costumes for your children. You want the outfits to fit comfortably with enough room for warm clothing underneath, but nothing should drag on the ground or be too long at the sleeves. You never want anything that could snag on sharp corners or trip them when walking. In fact, the number one cause of Halloween injuries in children each year is trip and fall accidents!

4. Make sure the mask fits right. There is nothing wrong with a mask as long as it fits properly. If a Halloween mask covers a child's entire face, you may want to modify it slightly. Check to see if your child can see clearly through the eyeholes; if he or she can't, carefully enlarge them to improve the field of vision. The same goes for the nose and mouth area. You want breathing to be unobstructed. If your child says the mask gets easily steamed up or feels too hot, enlarge the breathing holes. Consider using make-up instead of a mask so that there is no obstruction at all.

5. Make sure make-up is hypo-allergenic. Face make-up is an excellent alternative to a mask because it doesn't block vision or breathing at all, however, you do want to test your child's skin before Halloween night. Test the make-up on a small area (just under the chin line is a good spot) a few days before doing the full makeup and leave on for a few hours. Then watch the spot for 24 hours to see if there is any kind of a reaction. You can find hypo-allergenic make-up at most larger suppliers that will work on all but the most sensitive skins.

Halloween costumes are the highlight of the holiday for children – dressing up and pretending to be someone else for a magical night of make-believe is what Halloween is all about. Following these tips will ensure that it's not only fun but safe as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Where can i find a certain costume?
I'm looking for an ADULT LARGE GRIM REAPER in a store in Sarasota Where can i find one???

    • ANSWER:
Look for a scream costume. Don't wear the mask and find a scythe. Tada!

  2. QUESTION:
Need help with Grim Reaper details....?
My dad's 50th is coming up and my sister and I were going to have one of us (probably me) dress up like the Grim Reaper and go to his work. We have our ideas for the costume and plan to bring someblack roses, black balloons tied to a walker, maybe a package of adult protective underwear and a cane. But that's about all we have.

    Any other prop ideas?

Does the Grim Reaper say anything? Like "I've come for you, old man." I figure he is probably supposed to be silent.

I know this seems kinda evil but my dad will think it's hilarious, he has always played jokes on us, so we are getting him back! :)

Hope everyone in Y!A land can help make this a memorable 50th for my dad!

    • ANSWER:
The Grim Reaper is often portrayed playing chess with the person if they win over the Grim Reaper they get another chance at living. He is also a key holder sometimes, holding the key to hell. The scythe is of course part of the uniform. What' he's saying or not is probably up to you. "Time is up", "do you want to gamble for your life" referring to the chess or anything in those lines. Or silence, especially if he can't see that it's you. Then I think it will give the best effect. He'll be wondering what it's about, who it is and so on...

I think it's a great idea. I wish we had been that creative when our father had his birthday. We made a life size doll that looked like him and rigged it on the fence in front of the house. It wasn't really stable and the wind moved it around a little, making look as if it moved by it self. First it scared the living daylights out of our father when he went to get the morning paper. And then cars kept hitting the breaks in front of the house all day long. =)

It's the best I can do, but I really wish you good luck. It sounds like great fun to me.
